The Great Escape – MLK Weekend 2011

View from the back porch of the house.

So this past weekend was one of the most fun weekends I’ve had.  A bunch of friends from college brought their significant others to a mountain house just north of Asheville so we could hang out for the weekend.  The idea came about in Aug\Sept and after 4 months, 200+ emails and one almost crippling winter storm we finally made it up there Friday night.  I could talk about the 1/2 mile drive that wasn’t plowed and forced us to walk our belongings up the first night,  the intense games of Yahtzee, the overly competitive Capture the Flag\snowball fight, the politically incorrectness of Loaded Questions (thanks Andy), Wii battles or a million other things.  If you get me talking about the weekend, grab a beer and a comfy seat.  What is going to stay in my mind though and probably get us all back there is the complete relaxation that took place.

By relaxation I don’t mean that we sat around and did nothing.  Trust me, my sore rotator cuff from the snowball fight knows we did not become couch potatoes over the weekend.  What I mean by relaxation is that I never had to think twice or “censor” anything the entire weekend.  I knew whatever happened, the people there wouldn’t take offense or think worse of me.  It’s pretty incredible thing to have a group of friends you feel that comfortable with (FYI: This isn’t an honor held only by these 8 people).  It’s even more awesome when I look back at college and realize I only had a close friendship with 4 of these people and all the other friendships really took root after graduation (My wife included, GO ME!).  I know a lot of people that lose touch over the years with friends and I am so happy we  were able to get together for a few days.  I will be remembering this weekend for a while and hopefully we can get “a round of dos” next year.

Note: I also realized the my dude friends are fantastic at dating\marrying out of our league.  Especially Ed.

This post makes me so happy:) we definitely are making this an annual thing. We were also talking about how natural it all felt– nothing forced, definitely not censored, just pure fun. And we’re so honored to have been let in this crowd that began our freshman year! I was totally flattered by the last line until I realized it was more of an insult for edward lol, I love him:) and yall!!! Now, go get some reality.
